45: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

Tom Stoppard:

London: Faber And Faber, 1967

8vo, first edition, original printed wrappers, very minor chip at head of spine

His first play, which centres on and expands the story of two of the minor figures of Hamlet. The National Theatre production in April 1967 made Tom Stoppard's reputation virtually overnight. Its wit, stagecraft and verbal verve remain as exhilarating as they were then and the play has become a contemporary classic.

Awarded Plays and Players London Theatre Critics Award and Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright (UK) in 1967. Awarded Tony Award for Best Play (USA), and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Best Play of the Year (USA), and Plays and Players London Theatre Critics Award for Best New Play (UK) in 1968. The 1990 film of the same name written and directed by Stoppard and starring Gary Oldman and Tim Roth, won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film festival.

Annotated on 16 pages. Approximately 210 words.
