6: G. A Novel

John Berger:

London: Weidenfeld And Nicolson, 1972

8vo, first edition, original boards lettered in red and black on spine, dust-jacket, first signature loose, minor fraying to extremities of price-clipped dust-jacket

“G,” the hero of this modernist novel, which is set in pre-First War World Europe, is an appetitive young man, who has a number of dalliances, but slowly emerges into a political understanding of the world around him.

Winner of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Booker-McConnell Prize in 1972.  Accepting the Booker Prize, Berger said he would give half his cash prize to the Black Panther Party in Britain. Explaining his object was to turn the prize against its sponsors, Berger said, “Booker McConnell  have had extensive trading interests in the Caribbean for more than 180 years.”
