15: The Gathering

Anne Enright:

London: Jonathan Cape, 2007

8vo, first edition ("2 4 6 8 10 9 7 5 3 1" on imprint page), original black cloth lettered in silver on spine, dust-jacket, extremities of dust-jacket very slightly frayed

The title refers to the funeral of Liam Hegarty, an alcoholic who committed suicide. His mother and eight of the nine surviving children gather at this wake in in Dublin. The novel's narrator is 39-year-old Veronica, the sibling who was closest to Liam. She looks through her family's troubled history to try to make sense of his death, revealing uncomfortable truths about the relationships. Enright has edited her text, excising passages and some redrafting. This, then, must count as a new incarnation of The Gathering.

Winner 2007 Man Booker Prize and the 2008 Irish Novel of the Year.

Annotated on 33 pages. Approximately 100 words.
